The Presidents of the North and South
The Northern President The Northern President at that time was Abraham Lincoln. He was strongly against
-Slavery -States having more power than the National Government -war This political Cartoon shows Lincoln and Davis tearing apart a map of the united states in half. This shows the splitting of the northern and southern states and their attitudes torwards one another.

The Southern PresidentThe Southern President at the time was Jefferson Davis. He had not wanted to be president and instead had wanted to be the head General. He was an American War Hero and had fought in the Mexican/American war. He was chosen by the Southern states because
-He didn't have any strong political beliefs -He was a pushover (easily influenced) If the south wanted a certain right they knew he would give it to them. He pretty much did what his people wanted him to do.

Fort Sumter
Fort Sumter was a northern fort in the southern state, South Carolina. The northerners were surrounded by the south and the north had no supplies. The fort was located on an island near a harbor. The north got to control what ships came in and out of a southern harbor. The south had gotten mad though, and they wanted the northerners gone. The south had ordered them to evacuate the fort, however the order was ignored by the north. The south was really mad now and had decided to open fire at Forth Sumter with cannons for 34 hours. Not a single person was killed during this time. When the time was up the North had surrendered. However they wanted to leave with honor, so they had fired a 100 gun salute. During the salute, a pile of ammo had been shot at and had killed 2 people. These 2 deaths are the first deaths of the Civil War. This event is what had sparked the start of the Civil War.
